Well baseball is on its way and so is spring, I believe it's warming up nicely. In the mean time here's a couple of articles and remarks to said articles to hold you over.
First I came along this article, Top 10 Useless Sports Traditions, this morning and although I agree with some of their ideas others I'm not so sure about. For those who aren't taking the time to click on the link I'll list the Top 10 for you.
10. Eyeblack/Antiglare stickers 9. NFL overtime rules 8. NBA draft lottery 7. Soccer penalty shootouts 6. Arguing with MLB umpires 5. NCAA Basketball (tournament) play-in game 4. Diving in soccer 3. NHL overtime losses 2. BCS Rankings 1. Referee discretion. However, not in their list but in their intro was also the MLB "foul/fair pole."
Alright the ones I agree with;
-Eyeblack/Antiglare, sorry most of your games are at night and you don't see alot of anybody putting something on their face for fun, unless you're 8 and want to get your face painted.
-NFL overtime rules, go with the college setup, it's much better
-Soccer penalty shootouts, the only fair way is the golden goal so what if it's takes the same amount of endurance as raining down sulphur (See Dogma) it could be part of the training, it's the only fair way.
-Diving in soccer, it has gotten pretty bad lately
-NHL overtime losses, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and sometimes you tie there's no such thing as a half win or a half loss, either play till you have a winner or you have ties as a stat forget this point thing...actually the league probably won't be around much longer do whatever the heck you want.
-BCS rankings, put in a Bowl Playoff system, it would work and you would have a true champion not this bull 2 champions question stuff
The ones I don't;
-NBA Draft lottery, for us fans of fantasy sports this is the only way to go it doesn't matter what happened last year, you get a fresh start this year. Plus as a sport with a Salary Cap if they enacted that properly and did away with signing bonuses and other crap that lets you wiggle out of it the cap would allow you to have more equity around the league. The lottery is a fun concept for those of us who could care less about professional basketball and it makes us think that we could win something and that's good for the game.
-Arguing with MLB umpires, just like fans of Bobby Knight go to see Texas Tech games just to see if he'll strangle somebody, throw a chair on the court, or punch a kid in the chin, fans follow Lou Pinella, Ozzie Guillen, and Don Zimmer to see what they will do next. Sometimes the argument works sometimes it doesn't. Along those same lines, on a personal note LaRussa has a friggin law degree, why not let him use those debating skills. It doesn't slow the game down because it usually happens during a commercial break anyway, give the fans something to watch.
-NCAA play in game, come on really!?! Why take away this gem of gambling how else are we going to let our brackets be decided by one stinkin' point? Stand up for the little guy isn't that what America is all about?
-Referee Discretion, alright so this guy saves it for last and by doing so I'm assuming that he believes that this is the most important. Well his argument is all about instant replay and consistency well are you always consistent at your job? Do you always write an excellent column that everybody loves? If not let's just go back to one of your better ones in the past and just tweak it a little. No referee discretion is what makes the game human the human experience isn't perfect and neither should our sports. If you want a "perfect" strike zone, or a "perfect" call on a pass interference play, or a "perfect" foul in soccer then go buy the game for your x-box and play it that way. As much as you, me and the next guy hate the refs they're part of the game and I'm for damn sure that none of us want to do it.
